Trump Says Fresh US-Iran Talks Could Happen in Pakistan “Within Two Days”

Peace talks between the United States and Iran may be starting again very soon. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that new negotiations could happen “over the next two days” — and the location will be the same as before: Pakistan.
This news comes just days after a round of talks between the two countries in Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital city, ended without any deal being made. The two sides talked for more than 21 hours but could not agree on anything. Despite the failure, Trump is now saying both countries are ready to try again.
Trump made these comments in a conversation with the New York Post. When asked about where the next round of talks would take place, he was clear: Pakistan is still the plan.
“It’s more likely that we go back there,” Trump said. “Why should we go to some country that has nothing to do with it?”
Trump also had kind words for Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir. He called him “fantastic” and said he is “doing a great job.” Trump credited Munir’s leadership as one of the reasons why Pakistan remains the top choice to host the talks between Washington and Tehran.
This was a big change from what Trump had said earlier. Just before his conversation with the New York Post, Trump had told reporters that the US would NOT be going back to Pakistan for any more Iran talks. But he called the newspaper back shortly after and updated his position, saying Pakistan is still on the table.
What About Europe?
Before now, Trump had hinted that a European country might serve as the next location for US-Iran talks. When reporters asked if he meant Turkey, he said no.
“No, somebody more central. Europe, maybe,” Trump said.
But Trump was not happy with how European allies have been handling the situation. He said they want to help but simply don’t know how to get things done.
“They’re doing nothing except to have meetings. All they do is have meetings,” Trump said. “They want to get there, but they just don’t know how to do it. They’re a paper tiger.”
These strong words show that Trump is frustrated with Europe’s role, even as he leaves the door open to hosting talks there one day.
What Happened at the Last Round of Talks?
The most recent face-to-face meetings between the US and Iran took place in Islamabad over the weekend. The talks went on for 21 long hours, but no agreement was reached when they ended on Sunday.
The US side was led by Vice President JD Vance. He was joined by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The Iranian side was led by parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
Even though no deal was made, VP Vance said the talks were not a total failure.
“I wouldn’t just say that things went wrong. I also think things went right. We made a lot of progress,” Vance said on Fox News.
He added that Iran made some moves toward the US position during the talks, which he called a “good sign.” But he said Iran did not go far enough.
“They moved in our direction, which is why I think we would say that we had some good signs, but they didn’t move far enough,” Vance said.
On Monday, Trump told reporters that Iran had already reached out and was “eager to negotiate a deal.” That was another positive sign that new talks could be coming very soon.
What Are the Big Issues?
There are several major problems that the US and Iran are trying to work out. The most important one right now is the Strait of Hormuz — a small but very important waterway in the Middle East through which a large amount of the world’s oil and gas travels every day.
Iran has effectively blocked the strait, cutting off a key route for global energy supplies. The US has promised to reopen it. Experts estimate Iran is losing around $435 million every single day because of this blockade.
Other major issues include Iran’s nuclear program and the international sanctions placed on Iran by the US and other countries. There is also concern about the ceasefire between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon, which has been under serious pressure.
A Pakistani government source told Reuters that during the weekend talks, there was a moment of real hope that a breakthrough was coming — but things changed quickly.
The world is now watching closely to see if the next round of talks in Pakistan will finally lead to a deal.
