A sniffer dog and garbage dump: How Patna cops cracked girl's murder in 72 hours

PATNA: In a significant breakthrough, the Patna Police have cracked the abduction and murder case of a 10-year-old girl within 72 hours. The success is largely credited to the precision of a tracker dog named Simba.

"Simba led investigators from blood-stained clothing and slippers found in a garbage heap directly to the rented residence of the accused, Ranjit Kumar, just 200 meters from the crime scene."

The Incident

The victim went missing on the morning of April 22 in the Begumpur area while delivering milk. Her body was discovered a day later, wrapped in a blanket in a narrow alley, sparking local outrage.

The Investigation & Arrest

Under the supervision of senior officers Kartikeya Sharma and Gaurav Kumar, the police utilized FSL teams and the dog squad. Simba’s trail led them to the doorstep of Ranjit Kumar, a street vendor who sold stickers.

The Confession

Under interrogation, Kumar confessed to the following:

  • He lured the girl into his home using free stickers.
  • When she resisted his attempt at sexual assault and raised an alarm, he struck her with a grinding stone.
  • He initially hid the body under his cot before dumping it in an alley after being spooked by a police patrol.

Police have recovered the murder weapon and blood-stained clothes. Officials are currently awaiting the post-mortem report to confirm if sexual assault occurred.
