Bombay High Court Sentences Journalist Tarun Tejpal to 10 Years Imprisonment in 2013 Rape Case
GOA — In a major legal development brought to you by america news world, the Bombay High Court Goa Bench on Thursday, August 6, sentenced prominent journalist and former Tehelka Magazine editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. The sentencing stems from a highly publicized rape case filed by a junior female colleague following an incident in November 2013.
A division bench comprising Justice Dr. Neela Gokhale and Justice Amit Jamsandekar pronounced the quantum of punishment, overturning a previous lower court acquittal. The court imposed the 10-year sentence under Sections 376(2)(f) and 376(2)(k) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
These specific sections deal with aggravated rape committed by a person in a fiduciary capacity or by someone who is in a position of authority and control over the victim. Notably, ten years of imprisonment is the minimum prescribed sentence under these severe provisions of the law.

Detailing the punishment, the court ordered that for the offenses under Section 376(2)(f) and Section 376(2)(k), Tejpal is sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment accompanied by a fine of Rs 5 lakh for each charge. Furthermore, the High Court handed down additional sentences for other related charges. Under Section 354A (sexual harassment) of the IPC, Tejpal was sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment.
Under Section 354B (assault or use of criminal force to a woman with intent to disrobe), he received a three-year rigorous imprisonment sentence along with a fine of Rs 10,000. Additionally, a combined fine of Rs 1,000 was imposed for offenses punishable under Sections 341 and 342. The court clarified that all the sentences will run concurrently.
The High Court’s decisive ruling marks a significant victory for the Goa Government, which had aggressively filed an appeal challenging a May 2021 verdict by a Sessions Court in Mapusa. In that earlier judgment, Special Judge Kshama Joshi had completely acquitted Tejpal of all charges, concluding at the time that there was insufficient material on record to corroborate the allegations made by the victim.
The original allegations surfaced when the victim formally complained to Tehelka’s then-managing editor, Shoma Chaudhry, on November 18, 2013. The incidents allegedly took place on November 7 and 8, 2013. A critical element of the case was an email sent by Tejpal to the victim on November 19, 2013. In the message, he issued a formal apology, stating, “I apologise unconditionally for the shameful lapse of judgement that led me to attempt a sexual liaison with you on two occasions… despite your clear reluctance that you did not want such attention from me.”
