Hundreds of students and government job applicants have taken to the streets in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, staging massive protests against alleged irregularities in state recruitment examinations.

The demonstrators are demanding the immediate cancellation of a preliminary civil service exam held in April, calling for it to be reconducted. Furthermore, they are pressing for India’s premier investigative agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), to look into widespread allegations of malpractice across other state recruitment tests, alongside the establishment of a fast-track court to hear related cases.

The movement, which began on July 25, intensified days later when protesters gathered at a stadium in the state capital, Ranchi, for an indefinite sit-in. Several demonstrators, including political activist Devendra Nath Mahto, have been on a hunger strike since Sunday to press for their demands.

The controversy erupted following the release of the preliminary civil service exam results last month. Candidates raised the alarm after answer sheets shared online allegedly showed that some successful applicants had answered fewer questions than expected, sparking widespread suspicions of rank manipulation. Hundreds of thousands of youths sit for these highly competitive exams annually, seeking the security and stability of government employment.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has addressed the unrest, assuring students that the allegations are being thoroughly investigated and promising that justice will be served. A Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probe is currently underway, examining claims that the exam contract was awarded to an agency with a prior history of irregularities. Authorities have already arrested more than a dozen individuals in connection with the case.

Amid the mounting pressure, Jharkhand Public Service Commission chairman L Khiangte resigned on July 22, just days before the protests officially began. The commission has since postponed the main examination.

The protests have also gained national traction, mirroring a recent youth-led demonstration in Delhi over similar exam paper leaks, which resulted in the resignation of a federal minister. The youth-led movement behind the Delhi protests has officially announced its support for the Jharkhand demonstrators.

Politically, the crisis has sparked a firestorm in the state. The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has staged protests outside the state assembly against the ruling government, with several lawmakers meeting the students to pledge their support. Meanwhile, the Congress party—which governs Jharkhand in an alliance with Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)—has also stated it supports the students’ right to protest, despite using similar exam leak issues to attack the BJP-led federal government nationally.
