ToggleU.S. Forces Confirm New Losses in Jordan and Iraq as Strikes on Iran Continue
Search teams recovered previously unidentified remains at the site of Sunday's Iranian strike in Jordan, while a separate blast during ordnance disposal in northern Iraq killed one more American service member — as Washington pressed ahead with fresh strikes on Iranian military infrastructure and its naval blockade in the Gulf.
Casualties & Search Operations
Jordan — July 17 Attack Site
U.S. Central Command said Sunday that a search of the location where an Iranian attack struck on July 17 turned up remains that had not previously been identified. Two service members were already confirmed killed in that attack, with a third listed as missing; the newly found remains are now going through an identification process.
Northern Iraq — July 18 Ordnance Disposal
In a separate incident, CENTCOM said one U.S. service member died in northern Iraq on July 18 while defusing unexploded ordnance from an Iranian one-way attack drone that had been shot down. A second service member was hurt in the same incident and is being treated for a minor injury. CENTCOM said it is holding back the names of those killed or missing until relatives have been formally notified.
U.S. Strikes & Naval Blockade
Retaliatory Strikes
Under President Trump's direction, U.S. forces launched another wave of strikes on Iran, targeting Revolutionary Guard coastal surveillance networks, air defenses, naval assets, and missile and drone storage sites, aimed at cutting Iran's ability to threaten shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Stated Objective
CENTCOM framed the strikes as a swift response against the Revolutionary Guard units blamed for the attacks on American troops in Jordan, tying the new operation directly to last week's casualties.
Gulf Shipping Blockade — Status as of July 19
U.S. forces say they are continuing to enforce a naval blockade against Iran to ensure vessels comply with restrictions. As of July 19, six commercial ships had been redirected away from the area and one additional vessel had been disabled.
