Russia Expects India to Keep Buying Oil Despite US Warnings

Russia says it will keep selling oil to India even with new US tariffs coming. This comes from officials at the Russian embassy in New Delhi. They spoke at a press meeting on August 20, 2025. And they hope talks with India and China will start soon.

India buys a lot of oil from Russia now. Before the Ukraine war, it was just 0.2 percent of India’s imports. But now, it is about 35 percent. This change happened fast. However, in July 2025, imports dipped by 24.5 percent to 1.5 million barrels per day. Still, from January to July, India got 1.73 million barrels per day from Russia. That is down 3.6 percent from last year. But Russia stays the top supplier.

Roman Babushkin is the charge d’affaires at the embassy. He said, “Despite the political situation, we can predict the same level of oil import by India.” Moreover, he thinks India and Russia will find ways around the US tariffs. These tariffs are 25 percent more on Indian goods to the US starting August 27. In total, it makes 50 percent. This is because India buys Russian oil.

The US president called it a punishment. Trade talks between India and the US broke down. They argued over farms, dairy, and oil buys. But India says the US move is unfortunate. Therefore, India will not change suppliers soon.

Buying from Russia is good for India. It is very profitable. Russia gives 5 to 7 percent discounts. And they have special ways to keep supplies going. Also, Russia now takes Indian rupees for payments. This fixed problems with stuck money in banks.

In addition, Russia wants to sell more. Like liquefied natural gas and coal. Denis Manturov, a top Russian official, said there is scope for LNG to India. They also plan more nuclear energy work together.

Now, about the talks. Russia wants trilateral meetings with India and China. These stopped after a border clash in 2020. But ties are getting better. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit China soon. It is his first in over seven years. And Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet Modi in New Delhi by year end. All three leaders will go to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation on August 31.

Babushkin said, “We are quite hopeful that this format will be resumed sooner rather than later.” This links to Russia’s idea of a greater Eurasian partnership. It could help peace and trade in Asia.
