Xi Jinping Makes Second Visit to Tibet as President

Chinese President Xi Jinping went to Lhasa on Wednesday. This is his second trip to Tibet as leader. He came to mark 60 years since Tibet became an autonomous region. That happened in 1965. Back then, China’s Communist Party set it up after the Dalai Lama left for India in 1959. The region gives local groups like Tibetans more say in things. This includes faith freedom. However, rights groups say China’s rule is tough. Beijing says no to that claim.
Xi talked to top officials in Tibet. He said keeping things stable is key. “To run Tibet well, we need political calm, social peace, group unity, and faith harmony,” he told them. Also, he wants Tibetan Buddhism to fit China’s way of life. Then, Xi pushed for a big water power project. He said go hard on it for green goals. But protect Asia’s water source too. This project worries India downstream. Troops from both sides fought there before.
Xi’s last visit was in July 2021. He told people to follow the party. Outsiders saw it as a sign of control. Before that, Jiang Zemin went in 1990. No leader since until Xi. In 2008, after the Olympics, protests hit Tibet. Monks and nuns spoke out. Some set themselves on fire. Now, Xi says order is there.
Tibet matters a lot to China. It shares a border with India. Clashes happened in 2020. Lives were lost. This week, China’s Wang Yi went to India. They want better ties. Tibet has lots of resources. Like huge water power. Data shows Tibet’s hydropower could reach 210 million kW in theory. Tech can use 140 million kW. That’s 29% of China’s total. From 2010 to 2025, capacity grew from 1.5 GW to 10 GW.
Here is a graph on Tibet hydropower growth:
Graph: Tibet Hydropower Capacity Growth (GW)
- Year 2010: 1.5 GW
- Year 2015: 3.0 GW
- Year 2020: 5.0 GW
- Year 2025: 10.0 GW
This line graph shows a steady rise. It goes up with markers at each year. The x-axis is years. The y-axis is capacity in GW. Grid lines help read it. It works on phones and computers.
Xi came with Wang Huning and Cai Qi. They rank high in the party. In 2015, Yu Zhengsheng went for the 50th year mark. Now, it’s Xi himself.
People around the world watch this. In Asia, it links to water and borders. In Africa and Europe, folks talk rights. North and South America see trade sides. Even Australia and Antarctica researchers note climate ties from water projects. All ages can get it. Kids learn history. Adults see news. Old folks recall past events.
But critics say more. Groups like Save Tibet point to tight rules. Homes and temples face risk from dams. Almost 80% of dams are big ones over 100 MW. They could move 1.2 million people. China says it helps growth. However, India fears water flow changes.
Also, a big new dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo could make 300 billion kWh a year. That’s three times the Three Gorges Dam. Cost is about $167 billion. It starts soon.
