On September 19, 2025, President Donald Trump signed a proclamation increasing the annual fee for H-1B visas to $100,000. This change aims to ensure that only highly skilled workers enter the U.S. and to prevent companies from replacing American workers with foreign labor. The H-1B visa program, often used by tech companies to hire skilled professionals, including many from India, has been criticized by the Trump administration as being misused.
White House official Will Scharf stated that the high fee will ensure companies hire “truly extraordinary” workers who won’t take jobs from Americans. The fee applies to both new H-1B visa applications and renewals, meaning companies must pay $100,000 per year for each visa holder, potentially affecting workers already in the U.S. This could make it harder for Indian professionals, who rely on H-1B visas and often face long waits for Green Cards, to stay in the country if their employers opt not to pay the fee.
Trump also introduced a new “Gold Card” visa program for highly talented individuals. This program allows foreigners who pay $1 million (or $2 million if sponsored by a company) to get expedited visa processing and a path to a Green Card. The administration says these moves will raise billions of dollars to cut taxes and reduce national debt while ensuring only top-tier talent enters the U.S.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick emphasized that the policy encourages companies to train and hire American workers instead of relying on foreign labor. Trump claimed that tech companies support the change, saying it allows them to hire exceptional talent while contributing to the economy. The proclamation is part of a broader effort to reform immigration and prioritize American workers. What do you think over this news .Share your thought comment box
