Concerns over the well-being of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan intensified on Monday after his son, Kasim Khan, publicly alleged that authorities may be concealing critical information about his father’s condition. Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned since August 2023 on a series of corruption-related convictions, has reportedly not had contact with his family for more than three weeks—despite a court order requiring regular visitation.

In a statement to Reuters, Kasim described the lack of communication as “psychological torture” and warned that the family fears “something irreversible” may have happened to the 73-year-old political leader.

“Not knowing whether your father is safe, injured or even alive is a form of psychological torture,” Kasim said, adding that their repeated attempts to meet Khan have been blocked without explanation. He called the situation “a human rights emergency,” underscoring the severity of the family’s growing alarm.

A Former Premier Behind Bars

Imran Khan, who served as Pakistan’s prime minister from 2018 to 2022, has been at the center of one of the country’s most tumultuous political periods. He was removed from power through a parliamentary no-confidence vote in April 2022 and later found himself entangled in an array of legal challenges.

By August 2023, Khan had been convicted in several corruption cases, including charges related to the illegal sale of state gifts. He was handed a cumulative 14-year prison sentence under laws his supporters claim were selectively applied to sideline him from politics.

Since his arrest, Khan has maintained his innocence, describing the cases as politically motivated. His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has accused the government and Pakistan’s powerful military establishment of orchestrating the legal campaign against him to dismantle his political influence.

Khan’s imprisonment has sparked widespread protests, violent clashes, and an ongoing debate over judicial independence in Pakistan. However, concerns about his physical safety have escalated sharply in recent weeks with the sudden and unexplained communication blackout.

Silence Raises Suspicions

Under Pakistani law, inmates—especially high-profile ones—are required to receive weekly visitation rights if ordered by a court. Kasim claims that despite such an order, the family has been denied access since early November.

He said the family submitted multiple formal requests for meetings but received no response. Private lawyers working with the family have also reportedly been denied access.

“What we are experiencing goes beyond due process violations,” Kasim said. “This is a complete information blackout. For three weeks, we have no direct, independent confirmation of his physical condition.”

He added that the government’s refusal to allow visits or release health updates is “deeply alarming” and “unprecedented even by Pakistan’s turbulent political standards.”

Government and Prison Officials Offer No Clarity

The Pakistani government has not issued an official statement addressing the claims made by Khan’s family. Prison authorities have similarly refused to comment, citing security concerns. This silence has only fueled more speculation about Khan’s condition behind bars.

PTI leaders claim they are being stonewalled by authorities and that attempts to verify Khan’s safety through legal channels have been met with procedural delays or non-responses. The party argues that the government is intentionally withholding information as political pressure intensifies ahead of the next election cycle.

A senior PTI official, speaking anonymously, said, “There is deep fear within the party that something serious has happened to Imran Khan. The lack of transparency is frightening.”

Political Tensions Deepen

Khan’s imprisonment has remained one of Pakistan’s biggest political flashpoints. His supporters view him as a victim of a broader crackdown on dissent, while opponents accuse him of trying to destabilize the country during his political downfall.

His health and treatment in jail have been ongoing concerns. In the past, PTI has claimed that Khan’s medical requests were delayed or mishandled, though authorities have denied mistreatment.

Human rights groups have repeatedly raised alarms about prison conditions in Pakistan, especially for political detainees. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have called for independent monitoring of Khan’s health and safety, noting the country’s long history of political prisoners facing harassment or unsafe conditions.

A Family in Distress

Kasim’s fears have resonated widely among Imran Khan’s supporters, both within Pakistan and across the Pakistani diaspora. Social media erupted with demands for proof of Khan’s well-being, with hashtags demanding transparency trending on X (formerly Twitter).

Kasim emphasized that the family’s distress has grown unbearable. “We are being kept in darkness. We have no idea what is happening behind those walls,” he said. “The silence from authorities is not just concerning—it is deeply cruel.”

Kasim, who has largely stayed out of Pakistan’s political crisis in recent years, said he felt compelled to speak out due to the severity of the situation. He insisted that the government must immediately provide access, allow lawyers to meet Khan, and comply with court orders.

International Pressure Mounts

Imran Khan remains a prominent global political figure, and his imprisonment has attracted international criticism. Western governments, including members of the European Parliament, have expressed concern about the fairness of his trials and the transparency surrounding his incarceration.

As news of the family’s latest claims spread, diplomats from multiple countries are reportedly seeking clarification from Islamabad about Khan’s status. Analysts suggest that Pakistan could face renewed scrutiny and diplomatic pressure if answers are not forthcoming.

What Comes Next?

For now, uncertainty continues to overshadow the fate of one of Pakistan’s most consequential political figures. PTI has vowed to file an urgent petition seeking immediate access to Khan, while the former prime minister’s supporters are planning protests demanding proof of life.

Kasim says the family will not stop until they are granted contact. “We only want one thing—to know that my father is alive and safe,” he said. “Every passing day without information is unbearable.”

As Pakistan’s political climate remains fraught with polarization, the mystery surrounding Imran Khan’s condition threatens to deepen tensions and raise new questions about transparency, accountability, and the rule of law in the country.
