Prime Minister Narendra Modi put forth a case for transformation at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil which took place on July 6, 2025. He reported that two thirds of the world’s population has no say in global institutions. Those which were put in place in the 20th century require urgent reform. Modi reported that the Global South is subjected to unfair treatment which is in many cases a result of “double standards”. His speech was on peace, security and fair governance. The summit’s theme “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for Inclusive and Sustainable Governance” played into his talk.
Modi’s words resonated with many. He put forth that which is required of developed nations’ is a greater role in global decisions. Also, this is not to say we are talking of mere representation which is what we have now. It’s of credibility and effectiveness. For instance many of today’s economic engines still do not have a seat at the table. Also out dated systems are failing to solve present issues. Modi is pushing for reform which is to make global institutions more inclusive and relevant.
The BRICS Leaders’ announced that which which which. They spoke out against the April 2025 attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir that left 26 dead. Also they put forth that action be taken against cross border terrorism and also that we see a pick up in work which the UN’s Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism is all about. Also the issue of Palestinian rights came up which they said should be addressed with the support of a two state solution and Israeli pullout from Gaza. Also there was criticism of recent Israel U.S. attacks on Iran which they saw as a break of international law.

BRICS which has now taken in members like Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia is seeing growth. Modi put out that this is a sign that BRICS is a body which is relevant in today’s world. At the same time he called on global entities like the UN Security Council and WTO to do the same. “We are in an age of AI which sees tech updates weekly it’s nonsense for global institutions to be stuck in a 20th century model which is80 years old we need 21st century software” he said. He also drew out his typewriter to computer software comparison which went viral online.
The summit also went into other current issues of the moment. For example climate finance and AI governance were very much at the forefront. BRICS put forth the case for fair funding to achieve Paris Agreement aims. Also they pushed out for responsible AI use to support sustainable growth. Modi reported on India’s commitment to peace and brotherhood which is particular relevant post the Pahalgam attack. He put forth that BRICS should unite against terrorism which the declaration’s strong stand supported.
India is to play a greater role in BRICS. In 2026 India will take over the BRICS presidency which includes hosting the summit. Modis trip as part of a five nation tour which is to present Indias active role in the world stage. He met leaders such as Brasils President Lula and South Africa’s President Ramaphosa which is to improve ties. Also Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had talks with her counterparts from Russia, China and Brazil on financial cooperation and the New Development Bank.

At AMERICA NEWS WORLD (ANW) we see that Modi is putting forth reforms which have the potential to transform global governance. He is focused on fairness which in turn is a theme that plays into the hearts of people in India, the US and also beyond. For instance young readers on forums like Quora and Reddit put forth the issue of the need for a fairer world order. In that regard Modi’s address speaks to a wide range of age groups.

The declaration which it’s strong stand on terrorism, Palestine and Iran issues does also point out the BRICS’ growing influence. As India is to take over BRICS in 2026 the world will be watching.
