In a pioneering move to enhance road safety and accountability, Bengaluru has introduced an AI-powered digital billboard at the bustling Trinity Circle, one of the city’s busiest intersections. This innovative initiative aims to publicly display real-time traffic violations linked to passing vehicles, fostering a culture of responsible driving among commuters.

“This new program in Bengaluru is designed to promote safe driving and compliance, backed by Cars24 and city traffic authorities.”

The digital billboard is equipped with advanced AI-enabled cameras capable of scanning vehicle registration numbers from up to 100 meters away. Within a mere ten seconds, the system retrieves relevant data from the national VAHAN database, displaying details such as pending e-challans, expired Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates, or other compliance issues directly on the screen .

This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Bengaluru Traffic Police, Cars24, CrashFree India, and Monday Ventures. Gajendra Jangid, co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer of Cars24, emphasized that the goal is not merely to remind motorists to clear dues or update documents but to instill a sense of responsibility. “Every responsible action on the road, however small, contributes to the lifeline of the city,” Jangid stated .

The real-time display of traffic violations serves as a deterrent, encouraging drivers to adhere to traffic rules and maintain up-to-date documentation. Bengaluru Traffic Police officials believe that this high-visibility initiative will have a significant behavioral impact, fostering more responsible driving habits among commuters .

Bengaluru faces a significant challenge in managing traffic violations. In a recent three-week period from August 23 to September 12, over 37.8 lakh traffic offences were recorded, leading to ₹106 crore in fines. This surge in violations prompted the state government to offer a temporary 50 percent waiver on pending challans, encouraging motorists to clear their dues .

The introduction of the AI-powered billboard is seen as a proactive step in addressing these challenges, complementing existing enforcement mechanisms such as challans and e-fines. By leveraging technology, the initiative aims to create a more transparent and accountable traffic environment in Bengaluru.

While currently operational only at Trinity Circle, there are discussions about expanding this initiative to other major intersections in Bengaluru. The success of this pilot project could pave the way for similar implementations across the city, contributing to enhanced road safety and discipline.

As Bengaluru continues to innovate in urban mobility solutions, the AI-powered digital billboard stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to integrating technology with public awareness for the betterment of its residents.
