Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for renewed global efforts to end the ongoing conflict with Russia, citing U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent success in brokering peace in Gaza as proof that diplomacy can prevail even after prolonged wars.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Zelensky said that the “momentum for advancing peace” should not be lost following the Middle East ceasefire deal, emphasizing that the same determination that brought quiet to Gaza could help achieve peace in Europe as well.
“Now, as the war in the Middle East comes to an end, it is important not to lose the momentum for advancing peace. The war in Europe can also be brought to an end, and for that, the leadership of both the United States and other partners is of utmost importance,” Zelensky said.

A Phone Call to Trump: “If Gaza War Can End, So Can Ours”
The Ukrainian leader’s comments came shortly after his weekend phone call with President Trump, during which he congratulated him on securing the Gaza ceasefire and reaffirmed his hope that a similar path could lead to an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.
“I congratulated @POTUS on his success and the Middle East deal he was able to secure, which is an outstanding achievement. If a war can be stopped in one region, then surely other wars can be stopped as well — including the Russian war,” Zelensky said in his earlier post.
The Gaza peace plan, announced by the Trump administration last week, resulted in a U.S.-brokered truce between Israel and Hamas, ending months of intense fighting in the region. The plan included the release of hostages, a phased withdrawal of forces, and U.S. support for Gaza’s reconstruction.
Zelensky pointed to that diplomatic success as an example of how American leadership can help bring other conflicts to a close, saying that “the right actions by Washington can also help bring an end to Russia’s war against Ukraine.”
Talks with Finland and Europe’s Security Outlook
Zelensky revealed that he had also held a lengthy conversation with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, focusing on coordination among European allies and strengthening Ukraine’s defense systems in the face of renewed Russian airstrikes.
“I am grateful for the readiness to help. Russia must be deprived of the means to continue its war and terror — and this can become the most reliable foundation for peace in our region,” Zelensky said.
According to Kyiv, Russia launched a fresh wave of aerial attacks on Monday night, targeting energy facilities and infrastructure across multiple regions. Ukrainian defense forces claimed to have intercepted most of the 96 drones launched, though several managed to hit their targets.
Officials said that aerial bombs struck Kharkiv, injuring at least 57 people, including several patients and medical workers at a city hospital. Energy facilities were also hit in Kharkiv, Kirovohrad, and Sumy regions, adding to Ukraine’s growing electricity shortages as winter approaches.
Ukraine’s Defense Needs: “Peace Through Strength”
Amid the escalating attacks, Zelensky reiterated Ukraine’s urgent need for advanced air defense systems, including U.S.-made Patriot and NASAMS units, as well as European SAMP/T systems.
He urged Western allies — particularly the United States, the G7, and NATO partners — to accelerate military aid and maintain unity in the face of Russian aggression.
“The world must compel Moscow to come to the table for genuine negotiations. Only peace through strength can bring results. I thank everyone who is helping,” Zelensky stated.
The Ukrainian president’s renewed diplomatic outreach comes at a time when global attention has shifted toward the Middle East, raising concerns in Kyiv that waning international focus could embolden Russia to intensify its offensives.
Trump’s Growing Global Diplomatic Role
President Trump, whose administration recently celebrated the “New Dawn for the Middle East” deal at the Israeli Knesset, has been quick to highlight his administration’s role in ending the Gaza conflict. He has also hinted at possible U.S. engagement in brokering an eventual peace framework for Ukraine.
During a recent press interaction, Trump said, “If we can achieve peace in Gaza, we can achieve peace in Ukraine. It just takes strong leadership, fairness, and the will to stop endless wars.”
The U.S. president has, however, maintained that any future Ukraine peace initiative would depend on “real willingness from both sides” and assurances that Russia halts its strikes on civilian areas.
Challenges to Peace
Despite the diplomatic optimism, analysts caution that achieving a ceasefire in Ukraine remains far more complex than the Gaza agreement. The two-and-a-half-year-old war has entrenched frontlines, devastated infrastructure, and caused massive civilian displacement.
Moreover, Moscow has given no indication of halting its campaign, with Russian officials warning against what they called “Western interference” following Trump’s comments about potential Tomahawk missile deployments to Ukraine if Russia “does not settle the war.”
Still, Zelensky’s latest appeal marks one of his most direct public calls for an end to hostilities, suggesting a shift toward diplomacy even as Ukraine continues to defend itself militarily.
As winter looms and Ukraine’s energy grid remains vulnerable to strikes, the urgency for international mediation is growing. European leaders have largely echoed Zelensky’s stance, emphasizing that any peace deal must be based on Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Whether Trump’s Gaza success can translate into a framework for peace in Ukraine remains uncertain, but Zelensky’s outreach signals a new phase in the global conversation — one focused less on escalation and more on negotiated stability.
For now, Kyiv continues to push for both weapons and dialogue, hoping that global momentum for peace, once ignited, can bridge even the most entrenched divides.
