U.S. President Donald Trump announced Thursday that a resolution to the nearly two-year-long conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza is imminent. Speaking alongside Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the Oval Office, Trump expressed optimism about the prospects of a peace agreement.

“We want to get Gaza over with,” Trump stated. “I think we’re close to getting some kind of deal done,” he added, emphasizing the urgency of securing the release of hostages. The President revealed that approximately 20 hostages remain alive, while around 38 have been confirmed dead. “Pretty sad,” Trump remarked, noting the profound grief of the families seeking to bring their loved ones home.

In recent days, the Trump administration has engaged in extensive discussions with various stakeholders, including heads of state from Muslim-majority countries, to facilitate an end to the war and ensure the return of hostages. Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, and U.S. Senator Marco Rubio have been actively involved in these deliberations.

“Donald Trump, the U.S. President, shakes hands with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.”

On Tuesday, Trump presented a comprehensive 21-point peace plan to leaders from several Arab and Muslim-majority nations on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. The plan outlines a framework for a permanent ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the deployment of an international stabilization force to oversee Gaza’s transition. Key elements include the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the establishment of a Palestinian-led transitional administration, and the exclusion of Hamas from governance. The plan also stipulates that no forced displacement of Gazans will occur, and it involves Arab and Muslim nations in the stabilization mission.

Arab leaders have expressed cautious support for the plan, contingent upon a clear roadmap to Palestinian statehood and the involvement of the Palestinian Authority (PA) in Gaza’s governance. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has pledged to collaborate with the U.S., Saudi Arabia, France, and the UN to implement the peace initiative, emphasizing the PA’s readiness to assume full responsibility for Gaza’s administration. However, Hamas has rejected Abbas’s stance, viewing it as a violation of Palestinians’ rights to self-determination.

In a significant policy declaration, Trump also stated that he would not permit Israel to annex the West Bank, aiming to address concerns from Arab allies and support a two-state solution. This stance is tied to his administration’s new peace proposal, which includes the formation of a Palestinian-led transitional administration in Gaza, reconstruction efforts in Egypt, the return of hostages, and steps toward Palestinian statehood.

The Trump administration’s diplomatic efforts coincide with ongoing military operations in Gaza, where over 65,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed since the conflict began in October 2023. Despite the challenges, there is cautious optimism that the proposed peace plan could pave the way for a resolution to the longstanding conflict.

As discussions continue, the international community watches closely, hopeful that this renewed diplomatic initiative will lead to a lasting peace in the region.
