Mamdani, 33, is a socialist. He beat ex-gov Andrew Cuomo in a big shock. His plan has things like free bus rides & rent freezes. It has made young folks like him but the right don’t like it. McMaster called Mamdani’s ideas “bad.” He said they could wreck the economy. “New Yorkers need more than plans that hurt shops & families,” he said on Fox News.
Trump also hit out at Mamdani. He called Mamdani a “mad red” on Truth Social. Trump said hed hold back cash from New York if Mamdani wins. Yet, Mamdani hit back. He said Trump was just trying to steer us away from his own big plan. Trumps words are just to hide his true aim, Mamdani said at a rally.

The fight does not end there. Curtis Sliwa, from Guardian Angels and once a mayoral hope, stood up for Mamdani. He told folks to “stick to the facts.” Sliwa said it’s wrong to attack Mamdani’s roots or faith. Look at his plans, not who he is, Sliwa said on Special Report on July 7, 2025. His call for nice talk is not like the loud fights from both sides. On the other hand, Mamdani’s supporters argue his focus on affordability resonates with struggling New Yorkers. His campaign’s social media presence, backed by endorsements from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders, has drawn a multiracial coalition, especially in Asian and Hispanic neighborhoods. For instance, Mamdani won 80% of the vote in Ridgewood, Queens, and 79% in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Yet, he struggled in low-income Black neighborhoods like Brownsville, where Cuomo led with 51% support.

Moreover, the Republican unity praised by Lara Trump, who said she’s “never seen the party this united,” faces challenges. Some GOP lawmakers, like Rep. Warren Davidson, criticize the bill’s $3.3 trillion deficit increase. Elon Musk, once a Trump ally, also slammed the bill’s cost, vowing to back challengers in the 2026 midterms. This internal GOP friction could weaken their stance against Mamdani.
Additionally, Trump’s recent moves, like lifting H-2 visa restrictions, have won praise from farmers but fueled Democratic claims of hypocrisy. A GOP lawmaker also condemned anti-Trump activists for burning U.S. flags on July 4, calling it “disgusting.” Meanwhile, Trump and the First Lady celebrated the bill’s signing with a dance at an Independence Day fireworks event, though some Bay Area celebrations were canceled after an explosion.
