Dallas, Texas–
In a horrific incident that has stunned communities on both sides of the Atlantic, 50-year-old Indian-origin motel manager Chandra Mouli “Bob” Nagamallaiah was brutally beheaded in front of his wife and 18-year-old son by a Cuban co-worker with a known criminal history. The savage attack, which unfolded at the Downtown Suites motel in Dallas on September 10, 2025, has ignited fierce political backlash, with President Donald Trump and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) condemning it as a preventable tragedy tied to lax immigration enforcement under the previous administration. The Gruesome Attack

The violence erupted around 8:20 a.m. when Nagamallaiah, originally from Dharmavaram in Andhra Pradesh but raised in Bengaluru, Karnataka, instructed his colleague, 37-year-old Yordanis Cobos-Martinez, not to use a broken washing machine while cleaning a guest room. According to an arrest affidavit, Nagamallaiah relayed the message through a female co-worker acting as a translator, which enraged Cobos-Martinez. The suspect stormed out, retrieved a machete from his belongings, and chased Nagamallaiah across the motel parking lot toward the front office.
Security footage captured the chilling pursuit: Nagamallaiah desperately fleeing as Cobos-Martinez slashed at him repeatedly. His wife, Nisha, and son, Gaurav, rushed out to intervene but were shoved aside. Undeterred, the attacker hacked at Nagamallaiah’s neck until he was decapitated. In a final act of depravity, Cobos-Martinez kicked the severed head across the lot before dumping it in a nearby dumpster. Covered in blood and still clutching the weapon, he was apprehended at the scene by Dallas police, who had been alerted by horrified witnesses.

Cobos-Martinez, a Cuban national who had immigrated to the U.S., confessed to the killing and faces charges of capital murder. Court records reveal a prior rap sheet, including arrests for auto theft and assault in Houston, Texas. He had been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) but was released on supervision in January 2025 after Cuba refused his deportation due to his criminal background—a decision DHS now attributes to policies under President Joe Biden.
Victim’s Life and Legacy
Nagamallaiah, affectionately known as “Bob” to friends and family, had built a stable life in America after moving from India in 2018. A former entrepreneur in Bengaluru who ran successful paying guest accommodations, he initially settled in San Antonio before taking the manager role at Downtown Suites five years ago. Described by neighbors as “soft-spoken, humble, and generous,” he was a devoted family man whose death leaves his wife and son grappling with unimaginable trauma. Gaurav, a recent high school graduate, witnessed the attack while preparing for college.
The Indian Consulate General in Houston expressed deep condolences, stating they are providing full support to the family. A funeral service was held on September 13 in Flower Mound, Texas, attended by grieving relatives and the local Indian diaspora. A GoFundMe campaign for Nisha and Gaurav has raised nearly $200,000 to cover funeral costs and Gaurav’s education, reflecting the outpouring of global solidarity.
Political Firestorm: Trump and DHS Demand Accountability
The murder has become a flashpoint in the immigration debate. In a blistering statement on Truth Social, President Trump decried the killing as the work of an “ILLEGAL ALIEN from Cuba who should never have been in our Country.” He lambasted the Biden administration for releasing Cobos-Martinez, noting Cuba’s rejection of him as evidence of his “evil” nature. “This individual was released back into our Homeland under incompetent Joe Biden… The time for being soft on illegal immigrant criminals is over under my watch,” Trump declared, vowing swift prosecution.
Echoing the sentiment, DHS issued a scathing post on X (formerly Twitter), labeling the slaying a “gruesome, savage” act that “was completely preventable” had Cobos-Martinez not been freed. The department highlighted its new aggressive stance: “President Trump and Secretary Kristi Noem are no longer allowing barbaric criminals to indefinitely remain in America. If you come to our country illegally, you could end up in Eswatini, Uganda, South Sudan, or Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT).” ICE has already lodged a detainer on Cobos-Martinez at Dallas County Jail, signaling potential deportation post-trial to a third country.
Hindu American Foundation Executive Director Suhag Shukla called the incident “shaken” for the community, urging “patience and acceptance over violence” while emphasizing shared humanity. Advocacy groups like the ACLU have cautioned against broad-brush immigration rhetoric, but the tragedy underscores ongoing tensions over border security and migrant vetting.
Broader Implications
As Dallas police continue their investigation, bolstered by damning video evidence, this case joins a string of high-profile crimes involving undocumented individuals, fueling calls for reform. For the Indian-American community—over 4 million strong in the U.S.—Nagamallaiah’s death is a stark reminder of vulnerability abroad. Friends in Bengaluru mourn a man who embodied the immigrant dream, only to meet a nightmare end.
America News World extends deepest sympathies to the Nagamallaiah family and calls for justice that honors his memory. Updates as the trial unfolds.
