Russian President Vladimir Putin landed in China today. He is there for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit. This event is big. It happens in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1. Leaders from many countries will talk about security and trade.

Putin wants to strengthen ties with China. He said Russia and China work together for the good of all people. They fight against unfair sanctions. These sanctions hurt their economies. Putin called them tools of neo-colonialism. He spoke to Xinhua News Agency before the trip.

The summit brings together heads from SCO members. This includes India, China, Russia, and others. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also there. He will meet Putin on the side. They might discuss trade and peace.

First, let’s look at why this matters. Russia faces tough times from Western sanctions. These started after the Ukraine conflict in 2022. The US and Europe cut trade. Russia turned to China for help. Trade between them hit $245 billion last year. That’s a record.

Putin praised China in his interview. He said they share views on global issues. Both want to reform the IMF and World Bank. They push for a fair financial system. No more using money as a weapon.

Moreover, BRICS is key here. It’s a group with Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Now it has more members. Putin said BRICS helps solve world problems. It fights discriminatory sanctions. These hurt growth in many countries.

Transitioning to the SCO, it’s about security in Asia. Founded in 2001, it covers 40% of the world population. Members work on terror, trade, and energy. This year, the focus is on countering Western influence.

Putin arrived with a warm welcome. Chinese officials greeted him on the tarmac. State media showed the red carpet. He will meet President Xi Jinping. They have met over 40 times in the past decade.

Now, let’s dive into data. Russia’s economy shrank due to sanctions. GDP fell by 1.2% last year. But trade with China grew 26%. Oil and gas exports to China rose 15%. Agricultural goods like pork and beef are new hits.

Here’s a simple graph to show trade growth:

Russia-China Trade Volume (in billion USD)

2021146
2022190
2023240
2024245

This data comes from official reports. It shows how ties deepened. Putin said payments in rubles and yuan increased. This avoids US dollars.
