New Delhi – India’s journey toward becoming a global innovation powerhouse received a renewed push on Monday as President Droupadi Murmu called on the Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC) to take a leadership role in positioning the country at the forefront of the global innovation economy.

Addressing the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of EEPC India in New Delhi, President Murmu underscored the critical role that engineering exports and innovation-driven industry can play in transforming India’s economic future.

“India, once celebrated as a global center of trade and knowledge, must reclaim that prestigious status,” President Murmu said. “EEPC, being an important stakeholder in the economic sector, should take this resolution with great determination.”

EEPC’s Role in India’s Global Trade Growth :

Over the past decade, India’s engineering export sector has experienced significant growth, rising from USD 70 billion to over USD 115 billion, despite geopolitical tensions and ongoing global trade disruptions. President Murmu credited the EEPC for playing a pivotal role in driving this surge, describing the council as a “vital link between Indian producers and international markets.”

“India’s engineering products and services are increasingly being recognized for their quality, affordability, and reliability,” she said. “This has helped India become a preferred partner in global value chains.”

The President’s remarks come at a time when India is strategically aiming to diversify its export markets, deepen its role in global supply chains, and leverage its demographic dividend to build high-tech manufacturing ecosystems.

Creating the Ecosystem for Innovation

While highlighting past achievements, Murmu’s speech focused more intently on the future — and especially on the need to foster innovation. She called on EEPC stakeholders to build an ecosystem that encourages creativity, supports entrepreneurship, and rewards research and development.

Innovation economies are the most competitive and prosperous economies in the world,” President Murmu noted.Stakeholders should pledge to make India a leading innovation economy.

She emphasized that India’s strength lies not just in its large and youthful population, but in the depth of its talent pool in science, engineering, and technology. The need now, she said, is to create the right structures and incentives to harness this talent at scale.

Leveraging India’s Engineering Advantage

India’s engineering sector has long been one of the country’s most robust and globally competitive industries. With the emergence of Global Capability Centers (GCCs) and digital transformation across sectors, the President observed that India is well-positioned to capitalize on both traditional manufacturing and advanced engineering technologies, including AI, automation, clean energy, and aerospace.

Despite global challenges, India’s engineering exports have demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability,” she said, noting that this adaptability is a strong base from which to launch more ambitious innovation goals.

Murmu encouraged Indian companies to continue moving up the value chain — from low-cost manufacturing to high-value innovation, from assembly lines to patent creation.

Reimagining India’s Global Identity

Drawing a connection between India’s historical identity and its current aspirations, Murmu called for a reimagining of India’s global position in knowledge and commerce. She noted that centuries ago, India was a renowned hub for knowledge, science, and international trade, and that today’s economic and geopolitical environment presents an opportunity to revive that legacy.

We must look to our past for inspiration, but our eyes must be firmly set on the future,”  She said. “ India can and should be seen not just as a supplier of goods, but as a source of ideas.”

She urged EEPC and other industry bodies to invest in skilling programs, industry-academia partnerships, and cross-border collaborations to accelerate this transformation.

A Call for Collective Commitment

President Murmu’s address was not just a celebration of EEPC’s 75 years of service, but a call to action. Her vision is aligned with India’s broader national goals of becoming a $5 trillion economy, boosting exports, and leading in next-generation technologies.

The government, she noted, is committed to supporting this vision through initiatives like Make in India, Startup India, and PLI (Production-Linked Incentive) schemes. However, she reminded the audience that lasting transformation would require the active participation of industry leaders, exporters, entrepreneurs, and technologists.

“This Platinum Jubilee is not just a milestone—it’s a launchpad,” Murmu said. “Let us move forward with renewed energy, aiming not just to catch up with the world, but to lead it.”

As the event concluded, members of the EEPC and invited dignitaries echoed the President’s sentiments, affirming their commitment to driving innovation, expanding exports, and helping write the next chapter in India’s global economic journey.
