Tirah Valley, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa | September 22, 2025 — At least 30 people, including women and children, were reported killed on Monday after Pakistan’s Air Force launched airstrikes in the Tirah Valley of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. While officials described the strikes as operations against Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) hideouts, local reports and videos emerging on social media suggest that a significant number of civilian casualties occurred.

Strikes on TTP Targets, But Civilians Hit

According to CNN News18 and local sources, the military offensive was aimed at suspected TTP positions in the rugged mountainous region bordering Afghanistan. The Tirah Valley, situated between the historic Khyber Pass and Khanki Valley, has long been a hotbed of militancy and tribal conflict.

Security officials told reporters that the strikes were “precise operations” against militants planning cross-border attacks. However, visuals circulating online tell a different story. Footage showed injured children lying on makeshift beds, women wailing over the bodies of loved ones, and villagers surveying destroyed homes.

Human rights activists have raised concerns that the operation, instead of targeting militants, inflicted heavy losses on civilians. Local tribal elders said that entire families were caught under the bombardment, leaving the community in shock.

Social Media Flooded with Disturbing Images

Videos shared on social media showed children and women among the casualties.

Several unverified videos shared on social platforms showed children with bloodstains and bandages, women crying for help, and men carrying bodies from the rubble. Locals claimed that the strikes hit residential areas rather than militant camps.

“The bombs fell on our village without warning. We lost our children, our wives, our homes,” one resident told reporters on condition of anonymity, fearing reprisal.

The Pakistani military has yet to release an official statement on the number of civilian casualties.

Tirah Valley: A History of Conflict

The Tirah Valley, located in the Khyber tribal district, has historically been a strategic corridor linking Pakistan and Afghanistan. Over the years, it has witnessed repeated clashes between militants, Pakistani forces, and local tribes.

The TTP, which has intensified its activities after the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, often uses the region as a sanctuary. In response, Pakistan has escalated its counter-terrorism operations. However, critics argue that the reliance on airstrikes in populated tribal areas risks alienating local communities and worsening the humanitarian crisis.

Civilian Toll Sparks Outrage

News of the casualties has sparked outrage among political observers and civil society groups. Analysts fear that such incidents could fuel further resentment against the state and provide propaganda material for extremist groups.

“This is tragic and counterproductive,” said a senior security analyst based in Islamabad. “Targeting militants is necessary, but the killing of civilians—especially women and children—undermines Pakistan’s own fight against terrorism. It creates more sympathy for militant narratives.”

International organizations have not yet issued statements, but human rights groups are expected to call for independent investigations.

Regional Implications

The strikes come at a time of heightened tension in Pakistan’s border areas. The country has witnessed a surge in terrorist attacks in recent months, many of them claimed by the TTP. Islamabad has accused the Afghan Taliban government of providing shelter to militants, while Kabul has rejected the allegations.

Observers note that Monday’s airstrikes could worsen already strained Pakistan-Afghanistan relations, especially if civilians are confirmed to be among the victims.

The Human Cost

For now, the images emerging from Tirah Valley highlight the devastating human toll. Entire families are reported to have perished, leaving behind grieving survivors in one of the most underdeveloped and conflict-ridden regions of Pakistan.

As the military pushes forward with counter-terror operations, questions are growing louder: Are civilians paying the heaviest price in the war against militancy? And how will Pakistan balance its security needs with the protection of innocent lives caught in the crossfire?

Until clarity emerges from official channels, the tragedy in Tirah Valley stands as another grim reminder of the complex and painful realities of the region’s decades-long conflict.
