Zealand has stopped most mail to the United States. This began on August 21. A new 15% US tariff starts August 29. Only letters, passports, and legal papers will go. NZ Post says it’s temporary. They’re working fast to fix it.
Moreover, the US tariff caused the issue. It ends tax-free small packages. NZ Post says airlines won’t carry tariffed mail. This affects packages to the US and places like Guam and Puerto Rico. “We’re acting quickly,” NZ Post said. They promise updates on their website.
Furthermore, other countries did the same. India, Germany, France, Belgium, Austria, and Denmark stopped US mail too. The US began these “reciprocal tariffs” in April 2025. Most start this month. The rules confuse everyone. NZ Post can’t predict costs or how it works.
For example, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon spoke on Radio New Zealand. “It’s hard to know the tariff’s full impact,” he said. He’s hopeful for a quick fix. But New Zealand hasn’t talked to the US yet. Luxon trusts NZ Post will sort it out.
Additionally, the tariff hits all New Zealand goods. It jumped from 10% to 15% this month. This affects businesses and shoppers. A survey showed 66% of Kiwi firms fear worse impacts than COVID-19. Data from NZ Post shows 30% of their US-bound mail is parcels. That’s now on hold.

X-axis: Countries (New Zealand, India, Germany, France, Belgium, Austria, Denmark)
Y-axis: Action Taken (Scale: 1=Partial Suspension, 2=Full Suspension)
New Zealand: 1 (Parcels stopped)
India: 2 (All mail stopped)
Germany: 1
France: 1
Belgium: 1
Austria: 1
Denmark: 1

The US Customs Service set new rules. These need updated shipment data and tax payments. This slows things down. NZ Post hopes it’s short-term. They urge checking their site for news.
In addition, this impacts people. Small businesses worry. One Wellington shop, South Pacific Berets, fears closing. They send 90% of goods to the US. The tariff adds costs. Customers may pay it or sellers eat the loss.
However, some mail still moves. Economy Letters and Express for documents work. But Economy, Tracked, Plus, and Courier services are paused. This hits both people and companies.
For instance, posts on X show frustration. Users call it a trade mess. Some blame Trump’s tariffs. Others say it’s bad for small shops. A Reuters post noted Japan also paused some US mail.

This affects everyone. From kids learning about trade to adults buying online. In India and the USA, tariffs spark debate. People want clear rules. Businesses need stable costs.
In conclusion, New Zealand joins others in pausing US mail. The tariff shakes things up. Solutions are coming, but it’s tough now.
