Kolkata: A 56-year-old man from Baguiati area in Kolkata has been cheated of nearly ₹65 lakh in a dating app fraud, police said on Sunday.
The man met a woman on a popular dating app on August 27, 2025. She introduced herself as “Niharika Agarwal” and soon started chatting with him every day. After building trust, she convinced him to invest money in an online share trading platform, promising very high profits.
At first, the man refused. But the woman kept pressuring him and sent fake screenshots showing huge returns on her own “investments”. To gain more trust, she made him invest just ₹40,000 first and quickly sent him ₹6,000 as “profit”. This small return made him believe the scheme was real.
Between September 5 and October 29, 2025, he transferred a total of ₹64,60,650 from his two bank accounts to different accounts given by the woman.
The truth came out when he tried to withdraw his money. The woman said he would lose everything if he withdrew now and asked for more money to “unlock” the funds. After that, she stopped answering his calls and messages.
Realising he was cheated, the man filed a complaint at Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station on Saturday. Police have started investigating the money trail, the fake trading platform, and the real identity of the woman.
This is one of many dating app investment scams happening across India. Cyber experts again warned people:
– Never send money to someone you only met online
– No genuine trading platform gives very high returns quickly
– Always check if the investment site is registered with SEBI
– If someone rushes you to invest and shows fake profit screenshots, it is usually a scam
Police say such gangs often operate from other countries and use Indian bank accounts of innocent or greedy people to receive money.
