Iran has said no to a planned transit corridor. This corridor is part of a peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The United States helped make this deal. President Donald Trump hosted the leaders at the White House. Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev and Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed it on August 8, 2025.

But Iran is not happy. Ali Akbar Velayati is a top adviser to Iran’s supreme leader. He said Iran will block the corridor. He said this on Saturday. He mentioned it would happen with or without Russia’s help. Iran and Russia are allies. However, Velayati thinks the corridor is bad for Armenia’s land rights.

The corridor would link Azerbaijan to its enclave Nakhchivan. It would go through Armenia. And it borders Iran. The route is called the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, or TRIPP. Trump thinks it’s like real estate he can lease for 99 years. But Velayati called it political treachery. He said it could become a graveyard for Trump’s mercenaries.

Moreover, Iran’s foreign ministry spoke out. They welcome peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan. But they worry about foreign meddling near their borders. They want projects to respect national rights. No outside interference.

Russia also commented. They support stability in the region. But they warn against non-regional players causing divisions. They mentioned bad experiences from Western efforts in the Middle East.

On the other hand, Turkey likes the idea. Turkey is a NATO member and backs Azerbaijan. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan talked with Aliyev. He offered support for peace. Turkey’s foreign minister said the corridor could link Europe to Asia through Turkey. It would boost energy exports.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have fought wars since the 1980s. It started over Nagorno-Karabakh. That area broke away from Azerbaijan with Armenia’s help. Last year, Armenia gave back some villages to Azerbaijan. Experts say a final peace deal might come soon.

Ahmad Shahidov from the Azerbaijan Institute for Democracy and Human Rights told reporters. He said the US deal is a roadmap. No big land disputes left.

Now, let’s look at why this matters globally. The corridor could change trade routes in the South Caucasus. For example, it might affect India’s plans. India uses the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). That goes through Iran to reach Europe and Russia. But the Zangezur corridor could bypass some parts. This might hurt Iran’s role. And India worries about that. Because India and Iran work together on trade. Also, it could link to China’s Belt and Road. So, countries in Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America, and even Australia might see changes in shipping costs.

In addition, the South Caucasus has growing trade. Here is some data. The GDP of Caucasus countries was about 2,395 billion USD in 2022. Projections show it rising to 3,100 billion by 2029.

Here is a simple bar graph of GDP for key countries in 2022 (in billion USD). I made it easy to see on mobile or computer:

Armenia: ############## (13.6B)
Azerbaijan: ################################################## (47.1B)
Georgia: ################ (15.9B)

This graph shows Azerbaijan leads in GDP. Trade with the US was 5.6 billion USD in 2008. But now, it’s more. For instance, Kazakhstan-US trade hit 3.4 billion in 2024. Though not Caucasus, it’s nearby. The corridor could add billions in trade. But Iran’s rejection might slow it.

So, what next? The deal brings hope for peace. But Iran’s stand adds tension. Turkey and the US push forward. Russia stays cautious. Armenia wants the corridor under its laws.
