Assam Police made big moves today. They added murder charges in the death of singer Zubeen Garg. This came after arrests. The case is now very serious. Zubeen died in Singapore last month. Many fans are sad and angry.

CID arrested Zubeen Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma (right) and Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta (left) from Delhi in connection with the singer’s death, in Guwahati on Wednesday.(CID)
Zubeen Garg was a star. He sang in many languages. People loved his songs. He was 52 years old. He went to Singapore for a show. It was the North East India Festival. But he died on September 19. He drowned near St. John’s Island. That is what police there said.
At first, it looked like an accident. Zubeen was on a yacht. He jumped into the water. He did it twice. Once with a life jacket. Once without. Friends pulled him out. He was not breathing. Doctors at Singapore General Hospital said he was gone.
But doubts grew fast. Fans did not believe it. They filed over 60 complaints. Zubeen’s wife, Garima, also complained. She wants the truth. She has not got the full report yet. Singapore police shared it with India’s team there.
Assam Police acted quick. They formed a Special Investigation Team. SDGP Munna Prasad Gupta leads it. The team has 10 members. They started work right away. They arrested two men first. One is Siddharth Sharma. He was Zubeen’s manager. The other is Shyamkanu Mahanta. He ran the festival.
Police caught them in Delhi. They brought them to Guwahati. A court gave 14 days custody. This was on Wednesday. Then came the big news. Today, police added murder charge. It is under Section 103 of the new law. That means Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Before that, charges were lighter. There was criminal conspiracy. Also, culpable homicide. And death by rash act. But now it is murder. That can mean death penalty. Or life in jail. Police said this after talks with the two men.
More arrests happened today. Two musicians are now in custody. One is Shekhar Jyoti Goswami. He played drums for Zubeen. The other is Amritprabha Mahanta. She sang with him. Total arrests: four. They were on the yacht that day. Police questioned them before. Now they are held.
Police found clues. They took Zubeen’s handbag from his manager. It had papers. It had medicines too. Now experts check those drugs. A second check on the body happened in India. It was at Guwahati Medical College. Samples went to Delhi lab. Results will take time.
The team wants to go to Singapore. They asked the government there. It is under a treaty. Singapore said wait two days. Police there did the first check. It said drowning. But India wants to see all files. They will share with the family soon.
Who was Zubeen Garg? He came from Assam. He sang Assamese songs best. But he did Hindi too. His hit “Ya Ali” is famous. He acted in films. He fought for his land. He spoke against bad laws. Like the one on citizens in 2019. Fans called him a hero.
His death hit hard. Thousands came to his last rites. Assam stopped work for days. Shops shut. Schools too. Music plays stopped. People lit candles. They want justice. Social media is full of posts. Hashtags trend. #JusticeForZubeen is big.
Police say they check everything. No stone unturned. They talked to more people. Some from the event. Some friends of Zubeen. The festival was to show Northeast culture. Food, dance, music. Zubeen was the main star. But he never sang.
What next? The team waits for lab reports. They plan Singapore trip. More questions for the four in custody. Fans watch close. They hope for answers. Zubeen’s songs live on. His voice echoes. But his loss hurts deep.
