The incident has sent shockwaves through Switzerland, with authorities now investigating the possibility that the blaze was deliberately set.

The fire broke out in Kerzers, a quiet municipality located approximately 25 kilometers, or about 15 miles, west of Bern, the Swiss capital. Emergency responders rushed to the scene as flames consumed the vehicle, but despite their swift efforts, the death toll rose to six.

Ambulance crews and helicopter medical teams worked urgently to transport the three critically injured survivors to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Frederic Papaux, a police spokesperson for the canton of Fribourg, confirmed the casualties and provided initial details about the incident.

Authorities have not ruled out foul play, with officials stating that an unspecified voluntary act could be the cause of the blaze. This phrasing has widely been interpreted as an indication that investigators are seriously pursuing an arson angle in the case.

Firefighters and police officers quickly moved to secure the scene, erecting barriers around the burned-out vehicle and the surrounding area to preserve evidence and allow investigators to begin their work.

The charred remains of the bus became the center of what is now a potential criminal investigation, as forensic teams examine every detail of how and where the fire originated.

Switzerland’s postal bus network, known locally as PostAuto, is a widely trusted and heavily used public transportation system that serves hundreds of towns and rural communities across the country. Postal buses are a cornerstone of Swiss daily life, particularly in smaller towns and villages where rail connections are limited.

The Kerzers route would have been carrying ordinary passengers going about their daily lives when the catastrophe unfolded.

The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of grief and concern from residents across the Fribourg region and beyond. Switzerland, a country known for its stability, safety, and efficient public infrastructure, rarely experiences incidents of this nature, making Tuesday’s events all the more shocking for the local population and the nation as a whole.

Authorities have urged anyone with information about the incident, including witnesses who may have seen something unusual near the bus before the fire started, to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation. Police have not yet named any suspects or persons of interest in connection with the case.

The three survivors who were hospitalized are reported to be in serious condition, and medical teams are working to stabilize them. Their identities have not yet been released, and the full identities of the six victims are also pending official confirmation as authorities work to notify next of kin.

As the investigation continues, Swiss transportation authorities and safety regulators are expected to review protocols surrounding bus safety and emergency response procedures. The incident has already prompted broader conversations about public safety on Switzerland’s road-based transit networks.

Further updates are expected from Fribourg cantonal police as the investigation develops and more information becomes available to the public.
